Indian-Origin Marissa Roy Set to Make History as Los Angeles City Attorney

Indian-American lawyer Marissa Roy is on course to become Los Angeles' next city attorney after securing a decisive lead in the November 3 election. A Yale Law School graduate, the 34-year-old has attracted attention for her Indian roots, Bollywood-inspired campaign videos and distinctive purple blazers.

An Indian-origin lawyer is set to take on one of the most important legal positions in Los Angeles. Marissa Roy, a 34-year-old attorney with a degree from Yale Law School, is poised to become the city's next city attorney after securing a commanding lead in the November 3, 2026, election.

Roy's victory is drawing attention not only because of her professional achievements but also because of her distinctive campaign identity. From colourful purple blazers and Bollywood music in social media videos to her energetic public appearances, she has created a campaign style that stands out in American local politics.

According to election results reported on November 4, Roy received 393,607 votes, accounting for 66.44% of the total. Her opponent, Los Angeles County prosecutor John McKinney, secured 198,831 votes, or 33.56%. McKinney has effectively conceded the race, although the contest had not yet been formally called in the latest Los Angeles Times report.

Who Is Marissa Roy?

Marissa Roy is the daughter of an Indian immigrant mother and a white American father. She grew up in Monrovia, in Los Angeles County, and has built her career in public-interest law and consumer protection.

Her educational journey began at Flintridge Preparatory School. She later attended the University of Southern California (USC) on a scholarship, where she studied philosophy. She went on to earn her law degree from Yale Law School in 2017.

During her time at Yale, Roy gained experience through a legal programme connected to the San Francisco City Attorney's Office. The work introduced her to affirmative litigation, an approach that uses legal action to protect public interests and hold powerful institutions accountable.

She joined the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office in 2017 and later worked on legal matters involving workers' rights, consumer protection and litigation against major corporations.

Bollywood Music and Purple Blazers Make Her Campaign Stand Out

One of the most talked-about aspects of Roy's campaign has been her unusual approach to political branding. Her social media videos have featured Bollywood music, while her bright purple and jewel-toned blazers have become a recognisable part of her public image.

The style has helped her stand apart from traditional political campaigns, which often rely on formal speeches, conventional advertisements and carefully controlled public appearances.

Her campaign also used personal touches, including colourful manicure designs associated with political allies and campaign milestones. For Roy and her supporters, these details represented solidarity and the relationships she had built with other progressive political figures.

Her energetic personality and social media presence have helped make her a recognisable candidate beyond the usual circles of local politics.

From Yale Graduate to a Major Legal Battle Against Meta

Roy's professional career has included work on significant legal cases. She became part of California Attorney General Rob Bonta's legal team, where she worked on consumer protection and litigation involving technology companies.

One of her prominent assignments involved the legal action against Meta over allegations that the company had misled the public about the potential harms of its social media platforms, particularly for children.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Roy was among the original members of the California legal team involved in developing the case. The litigation culminated in a reported $17-billion settlement in August 2026.

Her supporters have highlighted this experience as evidence of her ability to work on complex cases involving powerful corporations.

Roy has also worked on wage-theft cases, including efforts to recover money for workers who were allegedly underpaid by employers. These experiences have become an important part of her argument that the city attorney's office should do more than prosecute minor offences.

What Does She Plan to Change in Los Angeles?

Roy has campaigned on transforming the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office into what she describes as the city's largest public-interest law firm.

Her priorities include taking stronger legal action against landlords accused of exploiting tenants, protecting workers from wage theft and challenging corporate practices that harm ordinary residents.

She has also promised to use litigation to defend Los Angeles against federal policies that she believes could harm immigrant communities and other vulnerable groups.

The city attorney's office has several responsibilities, including prosecuting certain misdemeanours, advising city departments and representing Los Angeles in legal disputes. Roy wants to place greater emphasis on proactive civil litigation and consumer protection.

Her approach has attracted support from California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Senator Bernie Sanders and several progressive political leaders.

Marissa Roy's Election Victory

Roy contested the November 3 election against John McKinney, a veteran Los Angeles County prosecutor. The two candidates offered different visions for the city's legal office.

While McKinney focused on public safety, prosecution and neighbourhood-level crime, Roy emphasised tenant protection, workers' rights and legal action against corporations and government policies.

The election results gave Roy a substantial advantage. Her 66.44% vote share was nearly double McKinney's 33.56%. McKinney subsequently acknowledged the result and congratulated her.

Roy is expected to succeed incumbent Hydee Feldstein Soto, who was eliminated in the June primary.

If formally confirmed, Roy will become the second woman to hold the position of Los Angeles city attorney. Her expected elevation also marks a notable moment for Indian-origin representation in American public life.

From her Indian family background and Yale education to her unconventional campaign style and ambitious legal agenda, Marissa Roy's rise has become one of the notable political stories emerging from the United States in 2026.
