Director Gurmmeet Singh has revealed that the dream of taking Mirzapur from streaming to the big screen began almost immediately after Season 1.
Speaking about the journey, Singh recalled attending the screening of the first two episodes of Mirzapur at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in 2018. Watching the audience react to the series on a large screen gave the team an early indication that the world of Mirzapur could work theatrically.
That experience stayed with the filmmakers even after the show became a major streaming success. Singh said that around the time Season 2 was approaching, producer Ritesh Sidhwani was already encouraging the team to consider making a film because he believed the franchise had theatrical potential.
The Idea Was Always Bigger Than A Spin-Off
The theatrical plan was not initially about replacing another season or immediately turning the series into a movie.
According to Singh, the conversations were simply about the possibility that the world of Mirzapur could translate well to cinema. The makers had different ideas over the years, including the possibility of exploring the characters through a prequel.
However, a conventional prequel presented a storytelling challenge. The filmmakers wanted to bring together characters who had become central to the franchise, but the events of the series meant that several characters were no longer available within the timeline.
That changed the way the team approached the film.
Puneet Krishna Found The Story That Could Work
The eventual breakthrough came in 2024, when writer Puneet Krishna returned with a different approach to the story.
Instead of moving the narrative forward or making a straightforward prequel, the team decided to go “horizontal” and explore a chapter that existed within the established Mirzapur timeline.
That became the foundation for Mirzapur The Movie.
The official description from Excel Entertainment also presents the film as a previously unseen chapter from the world of Mirzapur, created specifically for the big screen. The story brings together Kaleen Bhaiya, Munna, Guddu, Bablu and other familiar characters while introducing a new threat in the form of Babban from Jaisalmer.
Why The Movie Is Set Around Season 1
One of the most interesting decisions was to place the film around the timeline of Season 1.
This allowed the filmmakers to bring back characters whose stories had already ended in later seasons, particularly Munna Tripathi, played by Divyendu Sharma.
Gurmmeet Singh explained that the team had to find a period where these characters could naturally exist together without changing the established events of the series.
The result was a story that expands the Mirzapur universe without attempting to rewrite the original three-season narrative.
Making Mirzapur Feel Bigger For Theatres
Moving from OTT to cinemas also required a change in scale.
Puneet Krishna explained that the writing had to become more cinematic because a theatrical film cannot simply feel like several episodes of a streaming series placed together.
The team wanted the movie to look and feel different from the show. This led to a larger canvas and the decision to take the story beyond the familiar lanes and streets of Mirzapur.
The introduction of Jaisalmer and its vast sand dunes helped provide that visual expansion. Krishna said the desert setting allowed the film to move from the relatively confined world of the series into a much broader cinematic landscape.
Mirzapur The Movie Brings Back Familiar Faces
The film brings together several key actors from the original franchise.
Ali Fazal returns as Guddu Pandit, while Pankaj Tripathi reprises Kaleen Bhaiya and Divyendu Sharma returns as Munna Tripathi. Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Sheeba Chadha, Shriya Pilgaonkar and Rajesh Tailang are also part of the cast.
The film also introduced new characters, including Babban “Babua,” a violent figure from Jaisalmer whose weapon of choice is a pair of scissors.
This combination of familiar characters and a new conflict was designed to give long-time fans something recognisable while still creating a fresh cinematic story.
The Film Was A Major Gamble: Gurmmeet Singh
Turning a successful OTT franchise into a theatrical film was not without risk.
Mirzapur had built its audience around streaming, where viewers could watch episodes at their own pace. Bringing that same universe into cinemas meant convincing audiences to pay for a big-screen experience while also ensuring that the film felt different enough from the original show.
Gurmmeet Singh has described the theatrical transition as a significant gamble. The film's reported box-office performance, however, gave the experiment a strong commercial response. Recent Mid-Day coverage says Mirzapur The Movie has crossed ₹300 crore worldwide.
What Could Come Next For Mirzapur?
The success of the movie has naturally raised questions about the future of the franchise.
Gurmmeet Singh has confirmed that Mirzapur will return, although he has not specified whether the next chapter will arrive as Season 4, another film or a different format. He said the eventual direction would depend on the producers and the fans.
Meanwhile, reports have already confirmed that work on Mirzapur Season 4 has begun at the scripting stage.
For the filmmakers, the possibility of another theatrical chapter also remains open. Puneet Krishna has suggested that a story involving characters such as Munna and Guddu could offer another interesting cinematic possibility.
From MAMI 2018 To A Theatrical Hit
The journey of Mirzapur The Movie effectively began with a simple audience reaction.
When Gurmmeet Singh watched the first two episodes of Mirzapur with a festival audience in 2018, the response made him and the team wonder whether this world could work on a cinema screen.
