Bollywood News: Gurmeet Choudhary has come a long way from his early days of struggling to find work in Mumbai. The actor, who became widely recognised after playing Lord Ram in the television series Ramayan, once survived on a very limited daily budget while trying to establish himself in the entertainment industry. Today, he and his wife Debina Bonnerjee are parents to two daughters and reportedly own a luxurious Mumbai home worth around Rs 16 crore.
Gurmeet Choudhary Survived On Rs 36 A Day
Before becoming a familiar face on television, Gurmeet Choudhary had to navigate the difficulties of starting a career in Mumbai. According to a recent Aaj Tak report, Gurmeet recalled during a conversation with comedian Bharti Singh that he used to manage his expenses with just Rs 36 a day.
The actor said he would leave home after having breakfast and travel around Mumbai by bus while carrying his portfolio and visiting different production houses in search of work. Lunch was sometimes limited to biscuits because he had very little money to spend.
His Father Helped Him Chase The Acting Dream
Gurmeet’s early journey was also supported by his family. In an earlier interview, the actor revealed that his father, who was in the Army, broke his fixed deposits to help him move to Mumbai and pursue acting.
Gurmeet recalled that his father helped him get his portfolio prepared and also accompanied him while he explored opportunities in the city. The actor has credited his father’s sacrifices as an important part of his journey into the entertainment industry.
Ramayan Changed Gurmeet Choudhary’s Career
Gurmeet eventually got his breakthrough with the television show Ramayan, where he portrayed Lord Ram. The role became a major turning point in his career and brought him widespread recognition.
His pairing with Debina Bonnerjee, who played Sita, also became popular with viewers. The two later married and continued to build their lives together away from the pressures of their early struggles.
From Lord Ram To Different Television Roles
After Ramayan, Gurmeet deliberately explored different characters rather than remaining associated only with his mythological image. He went on to play a completely different role in Geet – Hui Sabse Parayi, where his performance as a serious businessman helped establish him as a television heartthrob.
He later appeared in Punar Vivah and participated in reality shows including Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi.
Gurmeet Also Made His Bollywood Debut
Gurmeet Choudhary eventually moved from television to films. He made his Bollywood debut with the 2015 psychological thriller Khamoshiyan.
He subsequently appeared in movies including Wajah Tum Ho, Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana and Paltan. His career has since expanded across films and digital entertainment.
The Rs 16 Crore Mumbai Home
The contrast between Gurmeet’s early struggles and his current lifestyle is particularly striking when it comes to his home. In 2025, reports said that Gurmeet and Debina had purchased a luxury property in Mumbai’s Andheri West for around Rs 16 crore.
The home was reported to be located in the Windsor Grande complex and features expansive interiors, modern amenities and views from its balcony. At the time, interior work was reportedly still underway.
Gurmeet also shared an emotional note about the property, recalling how he and Debina once came to Mumbai with little more than a suitcase, dreams and each other’s support.
Gurmeet And Debina’s Family Life
Gurmeet and Debina are now parents to two daughters. Their family life has also become a part of their public presence, with the couple frequently sharing glimpses of their personal moments and projects online.
Beyond acting, Gurmeet has also built additional income streams through endorsements and YouTube, according to the recent Aaj Tak report.
From Financial Struggle To Building A Dream Farmhouse
Gurmeet’s success story does not end with his Mumbai residence. According to the latest report, the actor and his family are also working on a dream farmhouse.
