Govinda Questions Gen Z Protests, Says Politics Never Suited Him

Actor Govinda reacted sharply when questioned about Gen Z protests during an event in Bhopal. He questioned the use of the term 'Gen Z', urged young people to understand the motivation behind protests and admitted that politics never suited him.

Bollywood actor Govinda has sparked discussion with his remarks on Gen Z protests and his own political experience. During a recent visit to Bhopal, the actor appeared uncomfortable when journalists repeatedly brought up the term 'Gen Z' while asking about youth-led protests. He questioned where the term had come from and suggested that young people should understand the thinking and motivation behind any movement before becoming part of it.

The actor also spoke candidly about his time in politics, admitting that the experience did not suit him. Govinda's comments came during his interaction with the media at an annual function organised by International Public School in Bhopal.

Govinda Questions the Term 'Gen Z'

When journalists asked Govinda about Gen Z protests taking place in different parts of the country, the actor initially appeared reluctant to engage with the question. As the term was repeated during the conversation, he asked where this expression had suddenly come from.

Rather than giving a straightforward yes-or-no answer on whether he supported the protests, Govinda said young people should first understand the ideas and influences behind the movements they participate in.

He emphasised that people should think carefully about whether their actions are right or wrong. He also suggested that youngsters should discuss their decisions with their mothers and seek guidance before taking major steps.

The actor further questioned whether political interests or outside influences could be involved in some protests. His remarks focused on the importance of understanding the circumstances behind a movement instead of reacting without knowing its background.

'Politics Never Suited Me', Says Govinda

Govinda was equally candid when asked about his experience in politics. The actor said that politics never suited him and that he preferred to maintain distance from the subject.

He also expressed his dislike for the word 'politics' itself. When journalists questioned whether he objected to the word rather than the system, he acknowledged that the Constitution and the country's governance operate through political institutions.

Govinda's latest remarks bring back memories of his brief but eventful political career. In 2004, he contested the Lok Sabha election from Mumbai North on a Congress ticket and defeated senior BJP leader Ram Naik.

However, his political journey faced several challenges. He resigned from the Congress ahead of the 2009 Lok Sabha elections and subsequently returned his focus to films. In later interviews, he had described joining politics as a mistake and said that the experience affected his acting career.

In March 2024, Govinda returned to active politics by joining the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. His latest comments, however, indicate that he remains uncomfortable discussing politics as a personal career choice.

Govinda Shares His Views on Bold OTT Content

During the same interaction, the actor was also asked about bold and controversial content being shown in web series.

Govinda responded that entertainment platforms offer different kinds of content for different audiences. He suggested that viewers who dislike a particular show or feel uncomfortable watching it with their families can simply choose not to watch it.

His response reflected his view that audiences have the freedom to decide what they want to consume rather than expecting every show to suit everyone's preferences.

Govinda Says He Dislikes the Term Bollywood

The actor also shared his thoughts on the identity of Indian cinema. Interestingly, Govinda said he does not particularly like the term 'Bollywood' and believes Indian films should be recognised on a global platform without being restricted to a label.

He referred to veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan while discussing the subject and suggested that Indian cinema deserves an identity that reflects its own cultural and artistic strength.

Govinda expressed the hope that filmmakers would create cinema capable of achieving recognition worldwide. He indicated that terms such as Indian cinema or Hindi cinema better represent the country's film industry.

Remembers His Struggle Before Becoming a Star

During the school event, Govinda also spoke about his early struggles. He recalled that he began searching for acting opportunities at a young age and visited different production houses in pursuit of work.

He said his mother played an important role in shaping his life and encouraged him to practise Gayatri mantra meditation. According to Govinda, he followed her advice and regularly performed the spiritual practice for several years.

The actor also spoke about the importance of family values, discipline and staying connected to one's roots.

From Gen Z protests and politics to OTT content and Indian cinema, Govinda addressed several subjects during his Bhopal interaction. His remarks about politics and the younger generation have particularly attracted attention, offering a glimpse into his views beyond his familiar image as a Bollywood entertainer.
