Singer Mika Singh has renewed his criticism of Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal following the controversy surrounding his brother, Daler Mehndi, at a cultural event in the state. Mika has demanded an apology from the minister, arguing that an established artist should not be publicly humiliated.
The controversy erupted after Uniyal interrupted Daler Mehndi during a performance at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in the New Tehri area. A video of the incident circulated widely on social media, prompting reactions from celebrities and music industry personalities.
In his public response, Mika questioned the way the minister addressed his brother in front of the audience. He also urged Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to look into the incident and take appropriate action.
Mika’s central argument is that disagreements over a performance should be handled respectfully, rather than turning into a public confrontation.
Mika Singh Rejects Allegations Against His Brother
During the controversy, Subodh Uniyal questioned Daler Mehndi’s ability to perform and suggested that the singer appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Mika strongly rejected the allegation, maintaining that his brother does not drink alcohol.

Mika also argued that any concerns about the singer’s performance should have been addressed without making personal allegations in front of a crowd. He called on the minister to acknowledge the impact of his remarks and apologise for the way Daler was treated.
The allegation about alcohol consumption has not been independently established. The minister later explained that he had been concerned about the performance and believed the singer was struggling to sing properly.
The disagreement has since become a wider debate about how public figures should respond when they believe an invited performer has not met expectations.
Why Did Subodh Uniyal Confront Daler Mehndi?
The incident took place during a cultural programme at the Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in Uttarakhand. During Daler Mehndi’s performance, Uniyal went on stage and questioned the singer’s ability to speak and sing clearly.
The minister subsequently defended his intervention, saying he believed Daler was lip-syncing rather than singing live. He also claimed that the singer appeared unable to speak or walk properly and said he had suspected that something was wrong.
Uniyal later stated that he had not intended to hurt the singer. He maintained that he was responding to concerns from members of the audience and felt responsible for questioning the quality of the performance.
The minister also referred to the reported payment of ₹35 lakh for the event, arguing that the organisers had expected a satisfactory performance. These explanations, however, have not ended criticism of the decision to confront the singer publicly.
Bollywood Celebrities Rally Behind Daler Mehndi
Mika Singh is not the only entertainment personality to express support for Daler Mehndi. Several celebrities have criticised the public nature of the confrontation and called for greater respect towards the veteran singer.
Actor Anupam Kher questioned whether the singer needed to be reprimanded in front of the audience. Comedian Kapil Sharma, actor Rajpal Yadav and singer Badshah have also expressed support for Daler amid the backlash.
The reactions have brought renewed attention to the pressures faced by performers at public events. Many supporters believe concerns about a performance can be raised without making allegations about an artist’s personal conduct or health.
The controversy has also highlighted the importance of verifying claims before presenting them as facts, particularly when they concern a person’s health or alleged behaviour.
Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Responds
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has also addressed the dispute. He said the state respects artists and indicated that he would speak with Daler Mehndi and Mika Singh to resolve the matter.
Dhami suggested that the controversy should come to an end through dialogue and mutual understanding. His intervention came after Mika publicly asked the chief minister to look into the minister’s behaviour.
For now, Mika’s demand for an apology remains a central part of the debate. The incident has raised questions about the treatment of artists at government-organised events and the responsibility of public officials to maintain decorum.
While Uniyal has defended the reasons behind his intervention, Mika’s position is clear: artists deserve dignity and respect, even when questions arise about their performances.
