Singer Alisha Chinai has revealed a fascinating piece of Bollywood history involving Aamir Khan and Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Before Juhi Chawla was finalised as the female lead, Alisha had actually auditioned for the role opposite Aamir Khan.
Speaking to trade analyst Komal Nahta on the podcast Game Changers: The Music Series, Alisha recalled that she was interested in acting alongside her singing career. She attended the audition for the 1988 romantic drama and even rehearsed the dialogues with Aamir.
However, the experience made her reconsider the idea of becoming an actress.
Aamir Khan Personally Rehearsed Dialogues With Her
Alisha revealed that Aamir Khan rehearsed the dialogues with her during the audition process.
The singer had initially considered pursuing acting seriously, but something about the audition experience changed her mind. She recalled going home after the rehearsal and questioning whether she could perform the kind of emotional scenes expected from a Bollywood actress.
One particular concern was crying on cue. Alisha realised that she was uncomfortable with the acting style she encountered during the audition.

According to Alisha, she felt that the acting style in mainstream Bollywood films at the time was too artificial for her.
She said she felt she could not comfortably perform according to cues and described the acting environment as “contrived” and lacking realism.
That realisation led her to make a quick career decision. Instead of attending the final audition, she decided to concentrate on singing.
Alisha later recalled that she told herself she was simply a good singer and should forget about acting.
Only Alisha And Juhi Chawla Were Left
The revelation becomes even more interesting because Alisha said she and Juhi Chawla were the final two contenders at that stage.
Had Alisha attended the final audition, the casting history of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak could have been very different.
Instead, she withdrew, allowing Juhi to eventually take the role of Rashmi opposite Aamir's Raj.
The film went on to establish Aamir and Juhi as one of the most popular romantic pairs of the late 1980s.
Aamir Khan Was Reportedly Upset
Alisha also recalled Aamir Khan's reaction after she decided not to attend the final audition.
According to her, Aamir was quite upset that she had withdrawn from the process. However, she said he later appeared pleased that she had recognised acting was not the right path for her.
The singer described meeting Aamir only once after the incident. They exchanged smiles, and Alisha jokingly imagined that he might have been thinking she had made a foolish decision.

Released in 1988, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak became a major milestone for both Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla.
Directed by Mansoor Khan and produced by Nasir Hussain, the romantic drama became a breakthrough for its young leads.
The film's music, youthful romance and emotional storyline connected strongly with audiences, helping Aamir and Juhi establish themselves as leading actors.
Interestingly, Juhi has also spoken about the audition process in the past, including how Aamir helped her rehearse for the screen test.

Although Alisha did not become an actress, her decision to remain in music eventually produced a hugely successful career.
