Esha Deol Joins Malamaal Weekly 2, Says ‘This Is Exactly What I Needed’

Esha Deol is returning to full-fledged comedy with Malamaal Weekly 2. The actress has confirmed joining the upcoming comic caper, which also features Paresh Rawal, Riteish Deshmukh, Rajpal Yadav and Elvish Yadav. The film is expected to begin shooting in November 2026.

Esha Deol is ready to bring back her comic side on the big screen. The actress has officially confirmed that she has joined Malamaal Weekly 2, the upcoming sequel to the popular 2006 comedy Malamaal Weekly. The film already boasts a packed ensemble cast, making it one of the most interesting comedy projects currently taking shape in Bollywood.

Esha revealed that the project arrived at just the right time for her. After completing two very different films—a horror-comedy titled Ghungat and Telugu project SYG: Sambarala Yeti Gattu—she was looking for something lighter and packed with laughter. Malamaal Weekly 2, according to the actress, turned out to be exactly that.

Esha Deol Confirms Malamaal Weekly 2

Esha Deol confirmed her association with Malamaal Weekly 2, saying that she was eager to do a complete comic caper after working on projects with very different tones.

Calling the script hilarious, Esha said the film offers the kind of fun and light-hearted experience she had been looking for. She also spoke about her love for comedy, recalling that she had previously enjoyed working in films from the genre.

Esha has explored comedy earlier in her career, including the 2005 hit No Entry, where she starred alongside Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Bipasha Basu, Lara Dutta and Celina Jaitly.

Her addition to Malamaal Weekly 2 therefore brings her back to a space that audiences have seen her explore before.

Malamaal Weekly 2 Gets a Star-Studded Cast

The cast of Malamaal Weekly 2 is quickly becoming one of its biggest attractions. Reports have confirmed the involvement of Paresh Rawal, Riteish Deshmukh, Rajpal Yadav and Elvish Yadav.

Esha is not the only recent addition. Bigg Boss 17 fame Soniya Bansal has also joined the project.

Other actresses reportedly associated with the film include Raveena Tandon and Parineeti Chopra. Shilpa Shirodkar is also set to be part of the ensemble, marking her return to Bollywood after a gap of around 26 years.

With established comedy performers and several fresh additions coming together, the sequel appears to be aiming for a large ensemble similar in spirit to the original.

Will Malamaal Weekly 2 Continue the Original Story?

Interestingly, Malamaal Weekly 2 will reportedly not continue the exact storyline of the first film.

Instead, the sequel is expected to introduce a completely new story while retaining the basic flavour that made the original memorable. The narrative will reportedly once again revolve around ordinary people in a small-town setting whose lives descend into chaos because of poverty, greed and the possibility of suddenly becoming rich.

That approach could allow the makers to preserve the identity of Malamaal Weekly without simply recreating the 2006 movie.

The original film revolved around villagers and a lottery ticket that triggered a hilarious chain of lies, greed and misunderstandings.

Amit Joshi Takes Over as Director

While the original Malamaal Weekly was directed by Priyadarshan, the sequel will reportedly be helmed by Amit Joshi, who co-directed the 2024 romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.

This means the sequel will have a new filmmaker behind the camera while bringing back some familiar actors from the franchise.

Paresh Rawal, Riteish Deshmukh and Rajpal Yadav were all part of the original Malamaal Weekly, making their reported return particularly exciting for fans who remember the first film.

When Will Malamaal Weekly 2 Start Shooting?

According to current reports, Malamaal Weekly 2 is expected to go on floors in November 2026.

The makers have not yet officially announced a theatrical release date. More details about the characters, filming locations and complete storyline are expected to emerge once production begins.

For Esha Deol, meanwhile, the project adds another interesting title to her current lineup. After working across horror-comedy and Telugu cinema, she is now returning to the kind of light-hearted entertainer she says she was actively looking for.

With Paresh Rawal, Riteish Deshmukh, Rajpal Yadav, Esha Deol, Elvish Yadav, Raveena Tandon, Parineeti Chopra and Shilpa Shirodkar among the names associated with the film, Malamaal Weekly 2 is shaping up as a crowded comedy entertainer.

The biggest question now is whether this new gang can recreate the madness and humour that made the original film a fan favourite two decades ago.
