The Disha Salian death case has returned to the spotlight following a fresh investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), with MNS leader Amit Thackeray now speaking in defence of his cousin, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Amit said he believed Aaditya could never be involved in the matter. His comments came after Aaditya publicly denied ever knowing or meeting Disha Salian and described the repeated attempts to link him to the case as politically motivated allegations.
The developments come after the Bombay High Court directed the CBI to investigate the circumstances surrounding Salian’s death. The agency subsequently registered an FIR, but reports have clarified that no person has been named as an accused at this stage.
Amit Thackeray backs Aaditya
Amit Thackeray, son of MNS chief Raj Thackeray, was asked about the allegations surrounding Aaditya during his interaction with reporters.
According to PTI, Amit said, “Aaditya can never be involved in such a thing,” while describing his response from the perspective of a brother and family member. His statement represents his personal defence of his cousin and is not a finding by the investigating agency.
Amit’s comments came at a time when the case has once again become a major subject of public discussion following the CBI’s fresh probe.
The MNS leader’s remarks also come despite the political differences between the Thackeray factions. Amit is associated with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, while Aaditya is a prominent leader of Shiv Sena (UBT).
Aaditya Thackeray denies knowing Disha Salian
Aaditya Thackeray has rejected the allegations linking him to Salian’s death.
In a post on X, Aaditya stated that he had never met or known Disha Salian. He alleged that repeatedly connecting his name to the case was an attempt to damage his reputation.
His statement followed reports about the contents of the CBI FIR. Importantly, the FIR does not itself establish guilt or involvement. The available reporting says several individuals have been mentioned in connection with roles that the CBI is required to examine, while no accused has been named at this stage.
What the CBI FIR says
The CBI registered the FIR after the Bombay High Court directed the agency to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Salian’s death.
The FIR reportedly refers to several people, including Aaditya Thackeray, Dino Morea, Rhea Chakraborty and Sooraj Pancholi, among others, whose roles are to be examined during the investigation. Reports have stressed that these references do not mean that those individuals have been formally named as accused.
The CBI is expected to examine the allegations and evidence as part of its investigation before reaching conclusions about the circumstances of Salian’s death.
Bombay High Court ordered fresh investigation
The latest developments trace back to a September 2 order of the Bombay High Court. The court directed the CBI to investigate Salian’s death after a petition filed by her father, Satish Salian.
The court’s intervention came after questions were raised about the earlier investigation. According to reports, Mumbai Police had registered an accidental death report following Salian’s death in June 2020 and later concluded that she had died by suicide.
The High Court subsequently directed the CBI to appoint an investigating officer, record the statement of Salian’s father and register an FIR.
Disha Salian’s death and the Sushant Singh Rajput connection
Disha Salian, who was 28, was a celebrity manager who had been associated with actor Sushant Singh Rajput. She died on June 8, 2020, after falling from a residential building in Mumbai’s Malad area.
Six days later, on June 14, Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his residence in Bandra. The close timing of the two deaths subsequently led to widespread speculation about a possible connection between the cases.
However, claims surrounding any connection between the two deaths have been the subject of extensive public debate, while the current CBI investigation is focused on examining the circumstances of Salian’s death.
Investigation remains underway
With the CBI now conducting a fresh investigation, several questions surrounding the case remain subject to examination. The agency’s FIR provides the framework for investigating allegations and the circumstances surrounding Salian’s death, but the investigation itself will determine what evidence can be established.
Aaditya Thackeray has denied knowing Salian, while Amit Thackeray has publicly backed him. At the same time, the CBI is examining the allegations and the roles of people mentioned in the FIR.
The distinction is important as the investigation progresses: being mentioned in an FIR for the purpose of having a role examined is not the same as being formally accused or found guilty of an offence. The Bombay High Court had also indicated that individuals should not be treated as accused unless sufficient material emerges against them during the investigation.
As the CBI probe continues, further developments are expected to clarify the evidence and circumstances surrounding the 2020 death that has remained under public and legal scrutiny for years.
