Delhi High Court Refuses PIL Seeking Ban on Sunny Deol’s Suryaa

Sunny Deol’s upcoming film Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak has received temporary relief after the Delhi High Court refused to entertain a PIL seeking a stay on its release. The petitioners had objected to the film’s alleged portrayal of violence against doctors and corruption in the healthcare sector.

Sunny Deol's upcoming film Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak has landed in a legal controversy ahead of its theatrical release. The Delhi High Court has refused to entertain a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a stay on the film, which is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on November 20, 2026.

The petition was filed over concerns regarding the film's teaser, which allegedly portrays violence against doctors and presents corruption in the healthcare sector as a widespread problem. However, the court declined to hear the fresh PIL because a similar petition was already pending before another bench.

The development comes just weeks before the film's scheduled release and has brought renewed attention to the controversy surrounding its promotional material.

Why Did the Delhi High Court Refuse to Hear the PIL?

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma declined to entertain the PIL filed by Dr Nachiketa Bhatia and Dr Dhruv Chauhan.

The bench observed that a similar petition concerning the film was already being considered by a single-judge bench of the Delhi High Court. The court said there was no reason to initiate multiple proceedings over the same issue.

The petitioners were given the liberty to join the existing proceedings before the single judge and pursue their representations before the concerned authorities.

The earlier petition is scheduled for its next hearing on November 16, just four days before the film's planned theatrical release.

Importantly, the court's refusal to entertain this particular PIL does not amount to a final decision on the objections raised against the film.

Why Have Doctors Objected to Sunny Deol's Suryaa?

The controversy began after the release of the film's teaser on October 19, 2026. A group of doctors raised objections to certain scenes and dialogues, alleging that the promotional material depicts medical professionals as corrupt and presents physical violence against healthcare workers as heroic or justified.

The petitioners argued that the teaser includes references to excessive hospital billing, unnecessary diagnostic tests and commission-driven prescriptions. They claimed that such representations could create a misleading impression about the entire medical profession.

They also expressed concern that the film's promotional description, which refers to a story inspired by unbelievable true events, could lead viewers to believe that the alleged incidents represent established facts about the healthcare system.

According to the petitioners, such portrayals could damage public trust in doctors and potentially encourage hostility towards medical professionals.

What Are the Petitioners Demanding?

The doctors have sought intervention from the concerned authorities, including the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Their demands include an examination of the film and its promotional material, along with the removal or modification of scenes and dialogues considered objectionable.

They have also sought a disclaimer clarifying that the film is fictional and have raised questions about the regulation of online film teasers and trailers.

The petitioners have further argued that the portrayal of violence against healthcare workers could have wider implications for public safety and the relationship between patients and doctors.

The CBFC's counsel informed the court during the proceedings that certification for the film was still under consideration.

Suryaa Is a Hindi Remake of Malayalam Film Joseph

Directed by M. Padmakumar, Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak is a Hindi adaptation of the 2018 Malayalam thriller Joseph.

The original film follows a retired police officer who becomes involved in investigating a disturbing case connected to an alleged organ-harvesting racket. Its story explores serious questions surrounding medical procedures and the misuse of the healthcare system.

Sunny Deol plays the central character in the Hindi version. The film also features Ravi Kishan, Pragya Jaiswal, Jisshu Sengupta and Tinu Anand in important roles.

The project marks director M. Padmakumar's Bollywood directorial debut.

When Will Sunny Deol's Suryaa Release?

Despite the fresh legal development, Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak remains scheduled for a theatrical release on November 20, 2026.

However, the separate petition already pending before the Delhi High Court is scheduled to be heard on November 16. The court proceedings and the film's certification process remain important developments to watch before its release.

For now, the refusal to entertain the fresh PIL means that this particular petition has not resulted in a stay on the film's release. The larger legal challenge concerning its teaser and promotional content, however, remains unresolved.

With Sunny Deol in the lead and the film addressing a sensitive subject, Suryaa has become one of the most discussed Bollywood releases ahead of its November theatrical debut.
