David Dhawan Shares Challenges of Casting Salman Khan and Govinda in “Partner”
Director David Dhawan recently revealed in an interview that casting Salman Khan and Govinda together in the movie “Partner” was quite challenging. Although the two stars eventually came together for the film, Salman Khan was initially reluctant to work on the project. In addition to this revelation, David Dhawan also shared insights about one of Govinda’s well-known habits.

Govinda’s Habit of Arriving Late on Set
David Dhawan and Govinda have collaborated on around 17 films, making them one of the top duos of the 90s. Despite their successful partnership, it was commonly known that Govinda often arrived late on set, causing friction with several directors. When asked about this in an interview, He confirmed that while Govinda had a habit of arriving late, he always completed his work on time. The director also mentioned that Salman Khan was initially hesitant to join the film.
A Unique Bond Between David Dhawan and Govinda
In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, David Dhawan praised Govinda, calling him the “King of Improvisation.” He explained that they shared a unique language on set. For instance, when David would say, “The scene is stretched,” Govinda would immediately understand and respond, “David, I’ll complete the entire scene in one shot.” David emphasized that he could handle Govinda better than anyone else and that Govinda had immense respect for him.
The Challenge of Casting Salman Khan and Govinda Together
David Dhawan and Govinda have delivered several blockbuster hits like “Raja Babu,” “Coolie No. 1,” “Hero No. 1,” “Aankhen,” and “Saajan Chale Sasural.” Reflecting on his relationship with Govinda, David Dhawan remarked, “I’m the only one who can handle Govinda. He has given me a lot of respect.”
Casting Salman Khan and Govinda together in “Partner” was particularly challenging because Salman Khan was initially unwilling to work with Govinda. Recalling an old incident, Salman mentioned that there was no point in fighting with Govinda.
