Chhaava Film Controversy: Protests Erupt Over Dance Sequence Involving Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna
Chhaava Controversy: Protests Erupt Over Dance Sequence and Historical Accuracy Concerns
Bollywood Mascot: The film Chhaava, based on the life of Maratha warrior-king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has sparked a wave of protests. The controversy began after former Rajya Sabha member, Sambhaji Raje Chhatrapati, raised objections to certain scenes in the movie’s trailer. He emphasized the need for historians to review the film before its release to ensure historical accuracy.
The protests, particularly from Maratha organizations, intensified over a dance sequence in which Vicky Kaushal, portraying Sambhaji Maharaj, and Rashmika Mandanna, playing Queen Yesubai, were shown performing together. Critics felt the depiction of royal figures dancing was historically inappropriate and disrespectful.
Sambhaji Raje Chhatrapati, while appreciating the film’s attempt to highlight the life and valor of his ancestor, stated that he would like to see the entire film before its release. He also suggested that historians should be consulted to eliminate inaccuracies.
The controversy took a tangible form when protests erupted in Pune’s Lal Mahal, where demonstrators voiced their concerns about the film’s portrayal of historical events. One protester remarked that they found the depiction of the dance sequence after Sambhaji Maharaj’s coronation unacceptable.
Rashmika Mandanna, who plays Maharani Yesubai, expressed her emotional connection to her role after seeing the film’s trailer. While excited about her portrayal of a key historical figure, she also surprised fans by discussing her retirement plans during the trailer launch event.
As tensions continue to mount, the filmmakers are expected to address the concerns raised by the protestors and offer clarifications to ensure a balanced representation of history.
