Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal has reportedly apologised to veteran Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi following the controversy surrounding the interruption of his performance at a religious fair in the state. The apology was conveyed during a telephone conversation, according to media reports published on October 25, 2026.
The development comes days after a video of the minister confronting the singer on stage went viral on social media. The incident sparked debate about the treatment of performers at public events and the importance of maintaining dignity while addressing disagreements.
Mika Singh’s team welcomed the apology, expressing hope that the matter could now be put behind everyone involved.
What Happened at the Kunjapuri Mela?
The controversy erupted during Daler Mehndi’s performance at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, during Navratri.
While the singer was performing, some audience members reportedly raised objections over the difference between the live vocals and the background soundtrack. Minister Subodh Uniyal subsequently went on stage and questioned the performance in front of the audience.
The minister also alleged that the singer was under the influence of alcohol and criticised the quality of the performance. These allegations became a major point of discussion after footage of the confrontation circulated online.
However, the claim that Daler Mehndi was intoxicated has not been independently established. The controversy has therefore centred not only on the performance itself but also on the manner in which the veteran singer was addressed publicly.
Subodh Uniyal Apologises To Daler Mehndi
Mika Singh, Daler Mehndi’s younger brother, had spoken out in support of the singer after the incident. His team subsequently issued a statement welcoming Subodh Uniyal’s apology.
The statement stressed the importance of respecting artists and recognising their contribution to the music industry. It also expressed hope that the dispute would end and that all parties could move forward with mutual respect.
Mika had earlier defended Daler against the allegations surrounding the performance. He also called attention to the need for artists to be treated with dignity, particularly during public appearances.
The response from Mika’s team indicates that the apology may help bring the controversy to a close, although the episode has continued to generate discussion online.
Pushkar Singh Dhami Intervenes in the Matter
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also reached out to the Mehndi brothers following the controversy. According to reports, Dhami apologised on the minister’s behalf and invited Daler Mehndi and Mika Singh to visit the state.
Mika praised the Chief Minister’s approach, describing his communication as polite and considerate. He also indicated that Daler did not want the matter to be prolonged following the intervention.
The Chief Minister’s involvement added another development to a controversy that had expanded beyond the original performance, drawing reactions from members of the entertainment industry and social media users.
Debate Over Respect for Artists at Public Events
The incident has renewed discussion about how disagreements should be handled at public cultural programmes. While organisers and officials may raise concerns about the quality or appropriateness of a performance, the episode has prompted questions about addressing such issues in front of an audience.
Daler Mehndi is known for popular Punjabi hits such as Tunak Tunak Tun, Bolo Ta Ra Ra and Ho Jayegi Balle Balle. His long career has made him a recognisable figure in Indian popular music.
With Subodh Uniyal’s reported apology and the Chief Minister’s intervention, the immediate dispute appears to be moving towards resolution. Mika Singh’s team has urged everyone involved to move forward with mutual respect.
The episode remains a reminder that public controversies involving well-known performers can quickly extend beyond the stage, making careful communication and respect particularly important.
