Bollywood Mascot: Mumbai, September 6, 2024 – Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated political drama, Emergency, has faced an unexpected setback. Scheduled for release today, September 6, the film has been postponed due to issues with obtaining a certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The delay has left Ranaut disheartened, prompting her to share an emotional message on social media. Emergency, which explores the 1975 Indian Emergency period under then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was originally slated for release on November 24, 2023. However, due to unspecified reasons, the film’s release was postponed by seven months, with a new date set for June 14, 2024. The film’s release was further delayed due to Ranaut’s election campaign, following her election as a Member of Parliament from Mandi. After becoming an MP, Ranaut rescheduled the release for today, September 6. Unfortunately, this too has been delayed.

Controversy and Certification Issues

The film's release was marred by controversy following the release of its trailer on August 14, 2024. The CBFC has not yet granted certification to the film, which has led to its postponement. In her social media post, Ranaut expressed her disappointment and informed her followers of the delay, stating, With a heavy heart, I announce that my directorial film Emergency has been postponed. We are still awaiting certification from the CBFC, and a new release date will be announced soon. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Legal Challenges and Court Orders

Emergency has faced legal challenges from the Sikh community due to its depiction of a Sikh bodyguard involved in the assassination of Indira Gandhi. The controversy led to a case being filed against the film, and the Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the CBFC to make a decision by September 18. In response, the film’s producers approached the Bombay High Court to challenge the delay. However, the Bombay High Court ruled that it could not overturn the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s orders.

Looking Ahead

Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency is expected to shed light on a significant historical period and has been eagerly awaited by audiences. The film’s release delay highlights the complex interplay between creative expression and regulatory hurdles in the Indian film industry. As the makers await a resolution, the new release date will be announced once the certification issues are resolved. For now, fans and industry watchers will have to remain patient as Ranaut and her team navigate these challenges to bring Emergency to the big screen.
