Akshay Kumar, despite facing a string of box office disappointments, remains a prominent star in Bollywood. He is soon set to return with another horror-comedy, Bhoot Bangla. This film marks his collaboration with director Priyadarshan, a partnership that has historically resulted in several successful ventures. Kumar’s association with Priyadarshan harks back to the 2007 hit Bhool Bhulaiyaa, a film that remains a landmark in the horror-comedy genre.

The Original Casting Choice

Released in 2007, Bhool Bhulaiyaa featured Akshay Kumar, Shiney Ahuja, and Vidya Balan in leading roles. The film was well-received for its mix of comedy and suspense, and Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of the eccentric psychiatrist, Dr. Aditya Shrivastav, earned him considerable acclaim. However, it might surprise fans to learn that Kumar was not the initial choice for this role.

In fact, Saif Ali Khan was the first choice for the character of Dr. Aditya Shrivastav. Khan, however, declined the role for reasons unknown, leading the filmmakers to offer it to Akshay Kumar. Kumar’s exceptional comic timing and engaging performance contributed significantly to the film’s success.

Casting Changes

In addition to Akshay Kumar’s role, there were other notable casting changes. The role of Avni, initially offered to Rani Mukerji, was eventually played by Vidya Balan. Similarly, the part of Siddharth Chaturvedi, which was offered to Abhishek Bachchan, was later played by Shiney Ahuja.

Successor to Akshay Kumar

Following the success of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, the franchise continued with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, released in 2022. This installment featured Kartik Aaryan in the role of Ruh Baba, previously played by Akshay Kumar. The film, directed by Anees Bazmee, also starred Tabu as the witch. The sequel was a commercial success, continuing the franchise’s legacy.

Looking ahead, the franchise is set to expand with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. The upcoming film will feature Kartik Aaryan alongside Tripti Dimri and Madhuri Dixit. Vidya Balan, who played the iconic role of Manjulika in the first film, is also expected to return.

The journey of Bhool Bhulaiyaa from its original casting choices to its latest sequel highlights the evolving nature of Bollywood’s film industry. With Akshay Kumar having initially brought life to the character of Dr. Aditya Shrivastav, and Kartik Aaryan continuing the legacy, the franchise remains a significant part of Bollywood’s horror-comedy genre. Fans eagerly anticipate the next installment and the return of beloved characters.
