Rasika Dugal has one of those rare screen identities that became so closely associated with a character that audiences began calling her by that character’s name. As Beena Tripathi, popularly known as Beena Bhabhi, in Mirzapur, the actress created a character whose mystery, ambition and ability to manipulate situations made her one of the most memorable women in the crime drama universe.
But while the character gave Rasika Dugal widespread recognition, the actress says two very different projects played an important role in ensuring that she did not become trapped by the image of Beena Tripathi. According to her, Manto and Delhi Crime arrived at crucial points in her career and gave her the opportunity to show audiences another side of her acting.
The timing proved particularly useful. Manto came around the period before Mirzapur became a major phenomenon, while Delhi Crime allowed Dugal to follow up her success with a character that was completely different from Beena.

There is little doubt that Beena Tripathi became a career-defining role for Rasika Dugal.

Why ‘Manto’ Was Important for Her Career
While Mirzapur gave Rasika Dugal enormous popularity, Manto allowed her to demonstrate a completely different kind of performance.
In Nandita Das' biographical drama, Dugal played Safia, the wife of celebrated writer Saadat Hasan Manto. Unlike the calculating and secretive Beena, Safia was rooted in the emotional and personal world surrounding the famous writer.
For Dugal, the role represented much more than simply another acting assignment. She has spoken about how Manto gave her an opportunity to explore a character whose story deserved attention in its own right rather than existing merely as an extension of a famous man.
This distinction has been important in understanding Dugal's career. Her filmography has repeatedly moved between different genres and personalities, making it difficult to reduce her acting range to one successful role.
Then Came ‘Delhi Crime’
If Manto showed one side of Dugal's versatility, Delhi Crime provided another major departure.
In the Netflix crime drama, Dugal played Neeti Singh, a police officer navigating a demanding professional environment. The character was vastly removed from Beena Tripathi in appearance, temperament and circumstances.
Dugal has credited the contrast between these roles with helping her avoid being permanently associated with Beena. She explained that both Manto and Delhi Crime featured characters that were physically and emotionally different from Beena, giving audiences an opportunity to see her as an actor capable of transformation.
Her performance as Neeti Singh subsequently became another important milestone. In August 2026, Dugal won the Best Actress award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne for her performance as Neeti in Delhi Crime Season 3, further reinforcing her reputation beyond the Mirzapur franchise.
Typecasting Can Be Both a Blessing and a Problem
For actors, becoming strongly identified with one character can be a double-edged sword.
On one hand, an iconic role can bring recognition, loyal audiences and opportunities. On the other, casting directors and viewers may begin to associate the performer so strongly with that character that they struggle to imagine them in completely different roles.

The actress has suggested that the character still contains several unexplored layers. She has even acknowledged that audiences have expressed interest in seeing a spin-off exploring Beena's life before the events of Mirzapur. Dugal has said that such a possibility makes sense because characters with mystery surrounding them offer more opportunities for storytelling.
Her latest portrayal also adds another layer to the character. While Beena was initially viewed largely as someone trying to survive within a dangerous family, Dugal now sees a stronger sense of ambition in her.
That evolution is particularly interesting because it changes how audiences can interpret Beena's actions. She may not simply be reacting to the powerful men around her; she may also be quietly pursuing power for herself.
‘Mirzapur’ Fame Didn’t Define the Whole Career
Rasika Dugal's journey demonstrates why a breakout role does not necessarily have to become a career trap.
Beena Bhabhi remains the character that introduced her to a huge section of the audience, but Manto and Delhi Crime helped establish that her acting range could stretch far beyond the Mirzapur universe.
From Safia in Manto to Neeti Singh in Delhi Crime and Beena Tripathi in Mirzapur, Dugal has repeatedly moved between very different emotional worlds.
And with Mirzapur: The Movie bringing Beena back to the big screen, the actress is once again embracing the character that changed her career—without allowing it to become the only thing audiences remember her for.
That may ultimately be the biggest achievement of Rasika Dugal's career: she made Beena Bhabhi unforgettable, but she never stopped proving that she could be much more than Beena Bhabhi.
