The upcoming Bollywood film Udta Teer, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan, has hit a major hurdle ahead of its theatrical release. According to an exclusive report by Bollywood Hungama, the Nepal government has denied permission for the film to be publicly screened in the country.
The decision was communicated to the film’s makers through an official letter from Nepal’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The report states that the authorities considered the film’s subject matter to fall within a category prohibited under Nepal’s film legislation.
The development comes just days before the film’s scheduled Indian theatrical release on October 23, 2026. While the movie is preparing to reach Indian audiences, its planned release in Nepal has faced an unexpected setback.
Why Has Nepal Denied Permission for Udta Teer?
According to Bollywood Hungama, the official order stated that Udta Teer falls under subject matter prohibited by Section 5(3) of Nepal’s Film (Production, Exhibition and Distribution) Act, 2026 B.S.
The permission denial was reportedly communicated to the makers on October 16, 2026.
A separate report by Nepal-based outlet OnlineKhabar explained that the country’s film legislation allows restrictions on movies considered harmful to national security, public order, relations with friendly countries or social harmony. The report also linked the decision to the film’s India-Pakistan storyline, citing a film writer and critic.
However, the precise reasoning should be attributed to the official order and reporting rather than assumed beyond the available information. The denial of screening permission does not, by itself, establish that every aspect of the film was considered objectionable.
What Is Udta Teer About?
Directed by Akash A Kaushik, Udta Teer is a spy comedy featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan in the lead roles.

The story revolves around a Pakistani spy who infiltrates India on a mission but loses his memory following an unexpected turn of events. He subsequently begins to believe that he is a committed Indian patriot, creating confusion, comedy and chaos.
The film combines espionage, patriotism, action and humour, offering an unconventional take on the familiar India-Pakistan spy narrative.
Because the story involves national identity and cross-border tensions, its subject matter has become particularly relevant in light of the screening decision in Nepal. Nevertheless, the film’s full content and the official decision should be considered separately when discussing the reasons for the restriction.
Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan Lead the Cast
Udta Teer brings together Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan, who are joined by the late actor Mukul Dev and other cast members.
The film is written and directed by Akash A Kaushik, marking an important project in his filmmaking career.
It is produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla and Apoorva Mehta under Dharma Productions, alongside Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain of Sikhya Entertainment.
The collaboration brings together two production banners known for backing a range of mainstream and independent Hindi-language projects.
For the film’s cast and producers, the denial of permission in Nepal represents a distribution challenge in a neighbouring market, even as the Indian theatrical release approaches.
When Will Udta Teer Release in India?
Despite the setback in Nepal, Udta Teer is scheduled to release in Indian cinemas on October 23, 2026, according to published release information.
The film was originally planned for an earlier October release before its date was moved. The change was reported as a decision to provide the movie with a more favourable theatrical window.
The Nepal decision concerns permission for public screening in that country. It should not be confused with a ban on the film’s release in India.
At the time of reporting, the available sources did not establish whether the makers would appeal the Nepal decision, seek changes to the film or pursue any other route to obtain screening permission.
What the Nepal Decision Means for Bollywood
The development highlights how films dealing with politically sensitive subjects can face different regulatory decisions across international markets.
India-Pakistan stories have long featured in Hindi cinema, spanning espionage thrillers, action dramas, patriotic films and comedies. However, a film that receives a theatrical release in India may still encounter restrictions in another country based on local laws and regulatory assessments.
For Udta Teer, the immediate question is whether the producers and distributors will take further steps to secure permission for screenings in Nepal.
Until any official update emerges, the confirmed position is that the film has been denied public screening permission there, while its Indian release remains scheduled for October 23, 2026
