According to a report, Ashish had previously tried his luck in Bhojpuri cinema before coming to Mumbai. He arrived in the city around 20 days before the incident, hoping to find work and establish himself as an actor. Instead, mounting debt and unemployment reportedly pushed him towards a crime that eventually led to his arrest.
Actor Allegedly Snatched Gold Chain
The incident took place on September 20 in the Siddharth Nagar area near the Vakola Pipeline in Santacruz East. Police said Ashish was passing through the narrow lanes of the area when he noticed an elderly woman sitting outside her room.
The woman was reportedly paralysed and sitting outside her home. Police allege that Ashish identified her as an easy target and decided to steal her jewellery.
He allegedly covered his face with a handkerchief before approaching the woman and snatching a 21-gram gold chain from her neck. After the incident, he reportedly fled from the spot.
The woman's family immediately informed the police about the incident. A complaint was subsequently registered at Vakola Police Station, following which investigators began examining the available CCTV footage.
Mumbai Police Track Suspect Within 24 Hours
The investigation reportedly moved quickly after the chain-snatching incident. CCTV footage from the area helped investigators identify and track the suspected chain snatcher.
Police managed to trace Ashish within 24 hours of the incident and arrested him. The stolen jewellery was also recovered during the investigation.
The swift action by the police helped solve the case shortly after the complaint was filed. The incident has once again highlighted how CCTV surveillance can play an important role in investigating street crimes in Mumbai.
