Before Anupam Kher became one of the most respected actors in Indian cinema and married Kirron Kher, he had already been married once.
His first marriage was to actress Madhumalti Kapoor in 1979. However, according to his brother Raju Kher, the marriage lasted only a day or two.
In a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Raju revealed that Anupam and Madhumalti had been in a relationship for around two to three years before deciding to get married at a temple in Lucknow. What happened immediately afterwards, however, brought the relationship to an abrupt end.
“It Ended in One Day”
Raju Kher described the marriage as extremely brief.
He recalled that after the wedding, Anupam stayed in Lucknow for a very short time before leaving. According to Raju, Anupam eventually told him that he could not stay there and moved on, first spending some time in Shimla before heading to Delhi.
The marriage had been decided almost spontaneously. Raju explained that Madhumalti suggested getting married after their relationship had continued for several years, and Anupam agreed to the idea.
The two subsequently married at a temple in Lucknow.
Why Did Anupam and Madhumalti Separate?
This is perhaps the biggest unanswered question surrounding the story.
Raju Kher deliberately chose not to reveal the exact reason behind the separation. He said that only Anupam and Madhumalti knew what actually happened between them.
Raju described his brother as relatively straightforward at that stage of his life, while he characterised Madhumalti as a strong woman. However, he made it clear that he did not want to investigate or publicly discuss the private reasons behind their separation.
His approach was simple: it was Anupam’s personal life, and he believed his role as a brother was to support him rather than question him.
Even the Kher Family Did Not Know About the Wedding
Another surprising revelation from Raju was that the Kher family was not even present at the wedding.
Since the marriage took place at a temple in Lucknow without the family attending, they apparently did not initially realise that Anupam had actually got married.
Raju said that nobody from the family was there for the ceremony, meaning they were unaware of the marriage at the time.
This makes the story even more unusual, considering that Anupam would eventually become one of Bollywood’s most recognisable actors.
Anupam Kher Was Yet to Become a Bollywood Star
The marriage happened well before Anupam Kher established himself in Hindi cinema.
At the time, he was still trying to find his place as an actor. He later moved to Mumbai with the ambition of building a career in films.
Anupam made his Hindi film debut in Mahesh Bhatt’s Saaransh in 1984. His performance as an elderly grieving father was widely praised and became an important turning point in his career.
From there, he went on to build a remarkable filmography spanning several decades.
What Happened to Madhumalti Kapoor?
Madhumalti Kapoor also continued her career in the entertainment industry after her separation from Anupam.
According to Raju Kher’s account, she later married writer-director Ranjit Kapoor, and the couple had children together.
Madhumalti remained active as an actress and appeared in Hindi films and television projects over the years.
Anupam Kher Later Married Kirron Kher
Anupam Kher’s personal life eventually took a very different direction.
In 1985, he married actress Kirron Kher. The two had known each other from their days at the Department of Indian Theatre at Panjab University in Chandigarh.
Their relationship developed over time, and the couple eventually became one of the familiar pairs in the Indian entertainment industry.
Anupam and Kirron have remained together for decades, and Anupam also shares a close relationship with Kirron’s son, actor Sikandar Kher.
A Chapter Anupam Never Made Public
Raju Kher’s recent revelation has brought renewed attention to a part of Anupam Kher’s life that had largely remained out of the public spotlight.
While the marriage to Madhumalti Kapoor lasted only briefly, Raju has made it clear that the real reason behind the separation remains something only the former couple knows.
