Aneet Padda Was Karan Kapadia’s First Choice for Hunkkaar

Aneet Padda has once again impressed audiences with her performance, and this time, the actress has taken on a much more intense role in Hunkkaar: The Roar. Interestingly, filmmaker Karan Kapadia was determined to cast her in the courtroom drama after being impressed by her earlier work.

After winning widespread attention with Saiyaara, Aneet Padda has taken on a dramatically different role in Hunkkaar: The Roar. The six-part JioHotstar courtroom drama follows 17-year-old Meenu Rawat, a survivor who seeks justice after accusing a powerful self-styled godman of sexual assault.

According to director Karan Kapadia, Aneet was not simply one of several options for the role. She was the actress he and co-creator Nitya Mehra had in mind from the beginning.

Her Earlier Work Convinced the Makers

Karan Kapadia had already worked with Aneet during Big Girls Don't Cry. That experience apparently played a major role in his decision to cast her as Meenu.

The filmmaker said Aneet's earlier performance had convinced him that she possessed the emotional intelligence and maturity needed for such a demanding character. The role required her to portray a teenager dealing with trauma while also maintaining the strength to stand up against an influential figure.

For Karan and Nitya, bringing authenticity to Meenu was particularly important because the story deals with the psychological impact of sexual violence and the difficult journey towards justice.

Aneet Had to Go Beyond Her Saiyaara Image

Aneet's breakthrough in Saiyaara introduced her to a massive audience and established her as one of the most promising young faces in Hindi cinema.

However, Hunkkaar required something completely different.

Instead of a romantic or glamorous character, Aneet plays a teenager caught in a serious legal and emotional battle. Her character has to move through fear, anger, confusion and determination, often within the same storyline.

That contrast is one of the most interesting aspects of her latest project.

An Acting Workshop Helped Her Prepare

Karan revealed that Aneet participated in a workshop with acting coach Rachit Singh before filming.

The purpose was to help her understand the emotional core of a survivor and bring greater authenticity to Meenu's reactions. According to Karan, the workshop focused on the loss of trust, faith and a sense of security that can follow such trauma.

The preparation ultimately became particularly important for the courtroom sequences, where Meenu has to speak about her experience in front of others.

Karan Says Aneet Deserves the Credit

Despite being closely involved in helping Aneet prepare for the role, Karan Kapadia was careful not to take credit for her performance.

He said that while a director can put an actor in front of a scene, the actor ultimately has to perform it. In his view, the credit for Aneet's work belongs to Aneet herself.

Karan also described their relationship as more of a friendship than a traditional mentor-student equation. He said they have supported each other professionally and personally whenever needed.

What Is Hunkkaar: The Roar About?

Hunkkaar: The Roar centres on Meenu Rawat, a 17-year-old girl who accuses a powerful godman of sexual assault.

The accusation triggers an investigation led by police officer Jasleen Singh Soin, played by Fatima Sana Shaikh. The story then moves through the police system, courtroom proceedings, media attention and the influence surrounding the accused.

The series also stars Raghubir Yadav, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Ram Kapoor and Rajesh Sharma in important roles.

The Makers Wanted to Change the Usual Narrative

For Nitya Mehra, one of the important aspects of Hunkkaar was changing how stories about sexual violence are usually presented.

Rather than focusing only on the suffering of the survivor, the creators wanted to highlight the people and institutions attempting to fight back against an influential perpetrator.

Karan has similarly described the series as a story about people coming together to fight for what is right, while also showing hope instead of presenting the subject only through darkness.

Aneet Padda’s Career Is Taking an Interesting Turn

With Saiyaara establishing Aneet as a rising star and Hunkkaar allowing her to demonstrate a completely different side of her acting abilities, the actress is quickly expanding her range.

The decision by Karan Kapadia and Nitya Mehra to trust her with such a challenging character also shows how strongly the filmmakers believe in her potential.
