Akshay Kumar ‘Haiwaan’ Scores Big Before OTT Release, Here’s How It Compares With Yash’s ‘Toxic’

Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan’s Haiwaan has already secured a major non-theatrical deal, giving the Priyadarshan thriller a strong position even before its digital premiere.

Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan’s Haiwaan has already made an important move in the business side of its release. The Priyadarshan-directed thriller has reportedly secured its non-theatrical rights for a substantial amount, meaning the makers had already recovered a significant portion of their investment before the film reached audiences.

The development is particularly interesting because the current conversation around Bollywood and OTT business has changed considerably. A film’s theatrical performance is no longer the only factor that determines its overall financial picture. Digital streaming, satellite television and music rights can all play a major role in determining how much of a project’s cost is recovered.

In the case of Haiwaan, the early deal has given the Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan starrer a considerable cushion.

‘Haiwaan’ Secured a Major Non-Theatrical Deal

According to a February report by Bollywood Hungama, the makers of Haiwaan sold the film’s satellite, digital and music rights to Sony Network for ₹80 crore.

The report, citing trade sources, said multiple buyers were interested in the project before Sony emerged with the highest offer. It further claimed that the deal helped the team recover more than 70% of the film's investment.

That figure is significant because the deal was reportedly closed months before the film eventually arrived in theatres.

The arrangement also meant that the producers had already secured a substantial portion of the film's revenue streams before its theatrical run began. This kind of pre-release business has become increasingly important for big-budget Hindi films, particularly when producers want to reduce their exposure to box-office uncertainty.

Why the OTT Business Matters So Much

For a major Bollywood production, theatrical revenue is only one part of the larger business model.

A film can earn from cinema tickets, streaming rights, satellite television, music and overseas distribution. The balance between these revenue sources can vary considerably from one project to another.

Streaming rights have become especially valuable because a successful film can continue reaching audiences long after its theatrical run has ended.

In Haiwaan's case, the reported Sony deal included more than just digital streaming. Satellite and music rights were also part of the package, making the ₹80 crore figure a combined non-theatrical deal rather than an OTT-only valuation.

That distinction is important when comparing the film's business with other recent releases.

How Does This Compare With Yash’s ‘Toxic’?

The situation surrounding Yash's Toxic has been quite different.

Before its release, reports suggested that the makers were looking for a very high valuation for the film's digital rights. However, the movie's theatrical performance subsequently affected the conversation around its post-theatrical business.

Recent reports have said that the film's OTT rights remained unsettled for some time, with prospective offers reportedly falling well below the makers' original expectations. India Today reported that the digital rights were still said to be unsold earlier this month, with reports of offers going as low as ₹30 crore.

Another recent report said Toxic could stream on ZEE5 from September 25, although that date had not been officially confirmed by the filmmakers or the platform at the time of publication.

The contrast with Haiwaan is therefore notable. One project had reportedly locked a combined non-theatrical arrangement well before release, while the other faced uncertainty around its digital valuation after its theatrical performance.

‘Haiwaan’ Brings Akshay and Saif Together Again

The business story is only one reason the film has attracted attention.

Haiwaan brings Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan together on screen, with Priyadarshan directing the project. The combination has generated interest because the two actors have previously appeared together in films including Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Yeh Dillagi.

The new film takes them into a very different setting.

It has been presented as a thriller, with the story revolving around a retired judge whose family comes under threat from a convict he had previously sentenced. The project also features actors including Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar.

Priyadarshan's involvement adds another layer to the film. His long association with Akshay Kumar includes popular comedies such as Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Bhagam Bhag. The director and actor have reunited for the thriller after their recent collaboration Bhooth Bangla.

When Will ‘Haiwaan’ Arrive on OTT?

The film had its theatrical release on September 11, 2026.

However, the exact OTT premiere date is not currently confirmed across streaming listings. FilmiBeat currently lists the digital release date and platform as unavailable, while JustWatch's September 15 update showed the movie as available in cinemas but did not list an online streaming service.

That means reports about the non-theatrical deal should not automatically be interpreted as confirmation of an immediate streaming date.

The reported Sony arrangement establishes the rights business, but the actual OTT premiere schedule is a separate matter.

Why the Two Films Make an Interesting Comparison

Comparing Haiwaan and Toxic is useful because both are large-scale projects associated with major stars, but their post-theatrical journeys have been different.

Haiwaan reportedly locked its combined digital, satellite and music rights for ₹80 crore before release. Toxic, meanwhile, faced reports of a valuation gap around its streaming rights after its theatrical run.

That does not necessarily indicate the final profitability of either film. The complete financial picture also depends on production costs, theatrical distribution, overseas business, marketing expenses and other revenue streams.

For Haiwaan, however, the early non-theatrical agreement gave the producers an important source of revenue before the audience response could be measured.

Akshay Kumar’s Film Has More Riding on the Theatrical Run

Even with a substantial rights deal already in place, the theatrical performance remains important.

A strong cinema run can generate additional revenue for producers and distributors while also strengthening the value of a star's next projects. It can influence future satellite and streaming negotiations as well.

For Akshay Kumar, Haiwaan arrives during a busy period in his career. The actor has continued to work across different genres, while his collaboration with Priyadarshan has attracted attention because of their long history together.

Saif Ali Khan's presence also gives the project a second major draw, particularly for viewers who have followed their earlier collaborations.

The Bigger Picture for Bollywood

The business of Hindi cinema is increasingly moving towards a model where producers try to secure as many revenue streams as possible before and after theatrical release.

That is why a film's OTT deal can become news even before audiences have seen the movie.

The Haiwaan deal is a clear example of this strategy. If the reported ₹80 crore agreement is accurate, the makers had already secured a substantial amount through non-theatrical rights before the film's theatrical journey began.

The comparison with Toxic also shows how quickly the value of digital rights can change depending on audience response and market expectations.

For now, the confirmed part of the story is that Haiwaan has reached cinemas, while its exact OTT streaming date remains unannounced on the major listings checked.

The film's next chapter will therefore be its digital journey—and with the rights reportedly already secured, audiences now have to wait for the official announcement of when they can watch Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan's thriller from home.
