Bollywood News: Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan have shared the screen in some of Bollywood's most memorable films, including Josh, Mohabbatein and Devdas. However, their professional equation reportedly went through a difficult phase in the early 2000s, when Aishwarya was replaced in several projects they were expected to work on together.
Years later, an old interview of Aishwarya with Simi Garewal resurfaced, bringing attention back to that chapter of her career. The actress openly acknowledged that being removed from those films had hurt her, but she also explained why she never directly questioned Shah Rukh Khan about the decisions.
Aishwarya Rai Was Supposed To Star In Five Films With Shah Rukh
During her appearance on Rendezvous With Simi Garewal, Aishwarya was asked about reports that she had been associated with five films featuring Shah Rukh Khan.
One of the projects mentioned was Veer-Zaara, while Chalte Chalte was another major film from which she was eventually replaced. Rani Mukerji ultimately stepped into the lead role opposite Shah Rukh in Chalte Chalte.
The situation became particularly notable because Aishwarya and Shah Rukh had already shared successful screen space in Josh, Mohabbatein and Devdas. Their on-screen collaborations had established them as a popular pairing, making the sudden changes in their proposed projects a subject of considerable interest.
‘I Have Never Had The Answer To Why’
When Simi Garewal asked Aishwarya about the films that suddenly stopped happening, the actress admitted that she never received an explanation.
She recalled that there had been discussions about working together on several projects, but then, unexpectedly, those plans changed.
Aishwarya said she had no answer for why it happened. She also explained that when a decision is made without an explanation, it can naturally leave the person affected feeling confused.
Her comments made it clear that the situation had affected her emotionally at the time, even though she did not publicly pursue an explanation from those involved.
Aishwarya Admitted She Was Hurt
Aishwarya did not pretend that the experience had been easy. Speaking about being removed from the projects, she acknowledged that she was taken aback, confused and hurt.
However, she also made a distinction between privately wondering about someone's decision and directly confronting that person.
She explained that if someone felt the need to explain their decision, they would do so. If they chose not to, she did not believe in repeatedly questioning them.
This became one of the most remembered parts of her interview because it showed how she chose to handle a difficult professional situation without publicly demanding answers.
Why Aishwarya Did Not Question Shah Rukh
Aishwarya explained that questioning someone about their decision was simply not part of her nature.
She said that she might have wondered about the reasons privately, but she would not approach the person and ask, “Why?”
Her comments suggested that she preferred to maintain her dignity and move forward rather than remain focused on something she could not change.
She also said that, fortunately, the situation did not leave her sitting without work and questioning what would happen to her career next.
Shah Rukh Khan Later Expressed Regret
Shah Rukh Khan himself later spoke about the situation and expressed regret over replacing Aishwarya.
In a 2003 interview with India Today, Shah Rukh acknowledged that changing an actress after starting a project could be difficult and said he believed he had done wrong personally. He also said that, from a producer's perspective, there were business considerations involved and that he had apologised to Aishwarya.
Reports have also linked the Chalte Chalte casting change to disturbances allegedly involving Salman Khan during Aishwarya's relationship with him at the time. However, neither Shah Rukh nor Aishwarya publicly confirmed Salman Khan's involvement as the reason for the casting decision.
Chalte Chalte Remains The Most Discussed Case
Among the projects associated with the episode, Chalte Chalte remains the most frequently discussed.
Aishwarya had begun shooting for the film before Rani Mukerji replaced her. The film was backed by Dreamz Unlimited, the production company associated with Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla.
The casting change became part of Bollywood history, particularly because Shah Rukh and Aishwarya had already appeared together successfully in films such as Josh, Mohabbatein and Devdas.
Aishwarya And Shah Rukh Eventually Worked Together Again
Despite the difficult period, Aishwarya and Shah Rukh eventually shared the screen again.
The two appeared together in Karan Johar's 2016 film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, where Shah Rukh made a special appearance. The film starred Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in the lead roles.
Their later collaboration showed that the professional disagreement from the early 2000s did not permanently prevent them from working together.
A Chapter From Bollywood History Resurfaces
Aishwarya Rai's old comments have once again attracted attention because they offer a glimpse into a period when two major Bollywood stars were navigating a complicated professional relationship.
Rather than publicly attacking anyone, Aishwarya described how the experience made her feel and explained why she chose not to seek answers directly.
Her words about being hurt and confused, followed by her decision not to question the people involved, remain the most significant part of the old interview. The episode is now remembered as one of the more talked-about casting chapters in the careers of both Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan.
