Abhishek Banerjee, known for his brilliant portrayal of Jana in the hit film Stree, recently opened up about his struggles with depression following the success of the film. Despite the positive reception of his performance, Banerjee found himself typecast in comedic roles, leading to a challenging phase in his career. Stree, which released in 2018, was a massive hit, and Banerjee’s role as Jana became a fan favorite. The film's success took everyone by surprise, with the sequel, Stree 2, continuing to break box office records. The film crossed the ₹400 crore mark worldwide within its first week and is now approaching the ₹500 crore milestone. With the audience’s love for the character Jana, Banerjee's comedic timing was widely appreciated. However, the actor revealed in a recent interview that the aftermath of the film's success wasn't entirely positive for him. Speaking to News18 Show, Banerjee shared how being constantly offered similar comedic roles after Stree led him into depression. "Jana was indeed a big break for me, but after the film, everyone wanted me to play characters with the same quirky, colorful persona. I was getting stereotyped as a comic actor, which wasn't what I wanted to be known for," he explained. The actor further shared that the lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated his struggles. "I started feeling very depressed during the lockdown. It felt like I was being boxed into a single type of role, and that was disheartening. But then, I am extremely grateful to Sudip Sharma for offering me the role of Hathoda Tyagi in Paatal Lok. He had seen Stree and envisioned me in this intense, dark character," Banerjee said. The role of Hathoda Tyagi in Paatal Lok proved to be a game-changer for Banerjee. It allowed him to break free from the typecasting and showcase his versatility as an actor. His performance as the menacing yet complex character was highly praised, marking a turning point in his career. With Stree 2 continuing to garner success and Abhishek Banerjee’s diverse acting prowess gaining recognition, the actor's journey serves as a testament to the importance of breaking away from industry stereotypes. As fans eagerly await his upcoming projects, Banerjee’s story is a reminder of the personal battles that often accompany professional success in the entertainment industry.
