Aamir Khan is all set to return to Japanese cinemas with Sitaare Zameen Par, nearly nine years after his last starring theatrical release in the country. The 2025 film will arrive in Japan in spring 2027, giving Japanese audiences an opportunity to watch Aamir in his latest starring role on the big screen.
The Japanese release has been announced by distributor Geek Pictures, which will bring the film to theatres including Human Trust Cinema Yurakucho and YEBISU Garden Cinema, along with other locations across Japan.
Sitaare Zameen Par Gets A New Japanese Title
For its Japanese theatrical release, the film will be presented as Sitaare! The Miracle Team of Stardust. The Japanese title refers to the Hindi word “Sitaare”, which means “stars” in its plural form.
The Japanese distributor has also released new stills from the film alongside the announcement, giving audiences a fresh look at Aamir Khan’s character and the world of the movie.
The release is particularly notable because Aamir has developed a strong international audience through films such as 3 Idiots, PK and Dangal.
Aamir’s First Japanese Theatrical Release Since Dangal
Aamir Khan’s last starring film to receive a theatrical release in Japan was Dangal, which arrived there in 2018. Although his production Secret Superstar also reached Japanese audiences in August 2019, Sitaare Zameen Par marks his first theatrical release as a lead actor in Japan in nine years.
The Japanese market has previously responded to Aamir’s films, particularly 3 Idiots and Dangal. His international popularity has helped Indian cinema reach audiences well beyond India.
What Is Sitaare Zameen Par About?
Directed by R. S. Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par features Aamir Khan as Gulshan, a former basketball player who has fallen on difficult times and becomes an arrogant basketball coach.
After getting into trouble, Gulshan is assigned community service. His punishment requires him to coach a basketball team made up of adults with disabilities.
Initially, he treats the assignment as an obligation. However, spending time with the players gradually changes his outlook on life. His relationship with the team becomes a journey of personal growth, friendship and understanding.
The Film Is Connected To Taare Zameen Par
Despite the similarity in their names, Sitaare Zameen Par is not a direct sequel to Aamir Khan’s 2007 film Taare Zameen Par.
Instead, it has been described as a spiritual successor because of its focus on people who are often viewed differently by society. The film uses humour and emotion to explore ideas around inclusion, diversity and accepting people for who they are.
The original Taare Zameen Par marked Aamir’s directorial debut and became known for its emotional storytelling.
Sitaare Zameen Par Is An Official Remake
The film is also an official remake of the Spanish movie Champions, which was released in 2018.
The Indian adaptation shifts the story into the world of basketball while retaining the central idea of a coach forming an unexpected bond with a team of players with disabilities.
The Japanese distributor has highlighted the film as a human comedy that combines laughter and emotional moments while exploring acceptance and inclusion.
Ten First-Time Actors Join Aamir Khan
One of the notable aspects of the film is its cast of players.
The members of Team Sitaare are portrayed by 10 first-time actors who themselves have disabilities. They were selected through an extensive audition process for the movie.
According to the Japanese distributor, their performances bring authenticity and natural energy to the basketball team, making their characters an important part of the film’s emotional journey.
Aamir Khan Also Produced The Film
Along with playing the lead role, Aamir Khan also served as a producer on Sitaare Zameen Par.
The film stars Aamir alongside Genelia Deshmukh, Gurpal Singh, Dolly Ahluwalia and Brijendra Kala, among others. R. S. Prasanna directed the project.
The film combines sports, comedy and emotional storytelling while following Gulshan’s transformation through his interactions with Team Sitaare.
When Will Sitaare Zameen Par Release In Japan?
The Japanese theatrical release of Sitaare Zameen Par is scheduled for spring 2027. Geek Pictures will distribute the film across Japan, with Human Trust Cinema Yurakucho and YEBISU Garden Cinema among the announced venues.
