The Super Mario Bros Movie from Illumination/Nintendo/Universal continues to dominate globally, earning an estimated $871.8M as of Sunday. The international box office accounts for $437.5M of that total, and it’s expected to reach $900M soon. With upcoming releases in Korea and Japan, reaching the $1B mark seems inevitable. The movie earned $70.7M from 78 markets in its third week, with a 38% drop in holdovers. Seven new markets were added this week.

Super Mario Bros has achieved numerous milestones at the box office, including being the biggest release of 2023 globally and internationally. It’s also the second-biggest animated film worldwide since 2019, behind Minions: The Rise of Gru, and the No. 6 biggest Universal animated film of all time worldwide. It has surpassed several highly anticipated titles such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, No Time to Die, The Batman, and Thor: Love and Thunder to become the No. 7 studio movie released since 2019 globally. Universal has four of the top 10 studio titles released since 2019 globally and five of the top 10 internationally. The movie is now the No.1 film of 2023 in 31 international markets and the top studio animation/family title since 2019 in nine markets, including France, Italy, Mexico, and Central America.

Mexico, surpassing the lifetime box office earnings of the animated hit Coco to become the second biggest studio animation ever (behind Toy Story 4) and the fifth biggest movie ever. The total earnings in Mexico have reached $65.6M, surpassing the lifetime earnings of Avatar: The Way of Water and Avengers: Infinity War.

France witnessed remarkable box office results for Super Mario Bros during the midweek period due to school holidays. The movie has earned a total of $31.7M, surpassing the lifetime earnings of several hit films such as Minions: The Rise of Gru, Toy Story 4, Inside Out, and Despicable Me 2. In terms of performance, Super Mario is on par with Frozen 2 and ahead of Minions at the same point in time.

Germany The movie is the clear number one with a total of $37.2M, surpassing the lifetime earnings of hit films such as Beauty and the Beast, Finding Dory, Secret Life of Pets, Zootopia, Despicable Me 2, and Inside Out.

UK & Ireland Despite a heavy drop on Friday due to the end of school holidays, the movie remains dominant in the market with a cume of $51.7M through Sunday.

Australia The movie maintains its number one position with a total of $27.3M, surpassing the lifetime earnings of both Frozen films.

Spain The movie has grossed $19.6M in Spain.

Brazil The movie has grossed $18M in Brazil.

Central America Super Mario Bros movie achieved the highest-grossing third weekend in history in this region.

Ecuador The movie delivered the biggest animated Week 1 and 2 ever, and the second biggest Week 2 overall, with a cume of $6.4M, surpassing the lifetime earnings of Toy Story 4, The Lion King, Coco, and Avatar 2.

China The movie has grossed $20.5M in China.

Italy The movie has grossed $17.2M in Italy.

Super Mario dominates box office in Middle East and Malaysia

In the Middle East, Super Mario debuted strongly in several countries. In the United Arab Emirates, the film grossed $1.7M from 212 screens and claimed the top spot at the box office during the competitive Eid corridor. In Saudi Arabia, the movie played on 236 screens and earned $1M, more than double the earnings of other popular animated films like Sing 2, Toy Story 4, and Aladdin. In Lebanon, Super Mario had the biggest animated opening of all time, earning $145K on 18 screens and ranking as the 3rd biggest studio debut ever.

In Malaysia, Super Mario earned $1.2M, which was in line with the earnings of Despicable Me 3 and above Toy Story 4. It also more than doubled the earnings of Finding Dory excluding previews.

In the Philippines, the film earned $1.1M and claimed the top spot at the box office. It also had the biggest Friday and Saturday for an animated title since the pandemic began and the biggest Friday and Saturday for an April animation.

Globally, the film earned $39.3M in IMAX, making it the 4th biggest animated result ever. Of this, $10M came from overseas.

New Line/Warner Bros’ latest horror flick, Evil Dead Rise, debuted in 58 international markets and earned $16.8M. Its global launch totaled to $40.3M, making it the second highest-grossing Hollywood movie of the week at the international box office. The movie performed well in several countries across the EMEA region, including Italy, Spain, Greece, Holland, and Eastern Europe. In Latin America, it claimed the No. 2 spot in all markets except Peru, and earned a regional total of $5M, representing 30% of its international earnings.

Mexico was the highest-earning market for Evil Dead Rise with $1.9M, but it still fell behind Super Mario, and its earnings were similar to M3GAN and Scream VI, and 673% higher than the earnings of Evil Dead. In the UK, where Studiocanal releases the movie, it earned $1.8M from 650 screens and ranked No. 2. In Brazil, the horror-leaning market, the movie debuted at No. 2 with $1.5M on 782 screens, which was on par with M3GAN and 49% higher than The Pope’s Exorcist. In France, the movie grossed $1.3M via Metropolitan Filmexport, in line with M3GAN and A Quiet Place Part II. In India, it performed better than all comparable movies with earnings of $1.3M.
