Renowned singer Usha Uthup and veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty were conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan awards in a ceremony held in Delhi on April 22nd.
The legendary playback singer Usha Uthup expressed her immense joy upon receiving the honour. Speaking to ANI, she said, “I am overwhelmed with happiness. Tears of joy are evident in my eyes. This is the most significant moment of my life. Being recognized by the country and the government is more than anyone could ask for.”
Mithun Chakraborty, a stalwart of Indian cinema, was also honoured with the Padma Bhushan award for his outstanding contribution to the film industry. The actor, known for his versatile performances, expressed his gratitude towards the recognition. Speaking to ANI, Mithun said, “I am extremely happy. I have never asked anyone for anything in my life. The moment I got the call about being honoured with Padma Bhushan, I was speechless because I never expected it. This is indeed a joyous moment.”
Usha Uthup further elaborated on the significance of the award, stating, “I feel it’s natural to receive such awards if you are a classical singer or dancer or if you excel in your art. But for people like us, ordinary folks, being chosen for the Padma awards is a huge deal. Because I believe in peace and brotherhood, and I believe in collective strength. We can do something for each other. We can bring smiles through our music. That’s what interests me.”
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in India, recognizing distinguished service of a high order to the nation in any field. The awards were presented by President Draupadi Murmu in a ceremony attended by dignitaries and notable personalities from various fields.
The recognition of these eminent personalities from the world of arts and entertainment highlights the importance and value of their contributions to Indian culture and society.
