Ulka Gupta on Typecasting After ‘Simmba’ ‘Despite My Age, I Was Only Offered Sister Roles
Ulka Gupta, a prominent face in the glamour industry, has carved a niche for herself with her diverse roles across Bollywood, South Indian, and Marathi cinema. While she gained recognition with her portrayal as Ranveer Singh’s sister in the 2018 blockbuster ‘Simmba,’ Ulka’s journey has been anything but straightforward.
Post ‘Simmba,’ Ulka found herself typecast into sisterly roles, which she often turned down. However, breaking the mold, the 27-year-old actress is now essaying the challenging role of a single mother in the TV show ‘Main Hoon Saath Tere.’ Despite initial reservations, Ulka decided to take on the role as a challenge after auditioning for it.
Speaking about her latest venture, Ulka revealed, “My manager introduced me to ‘Main Hoon Saath Tere.’ Initially, I was hesitant about playing an on-screen mother. But after considering the auditions and the challenging nature of the role, I decided to embrace it.”
Portraying a mother without experiencing motherhood herself has been a challenging task for Ulka. “Motherhood is a beautiful experience, and I deeply respect the sacrifices a mother makes for her child. But understanding that emotion requires maturity, which I’m still working on,” she added.
Before her stint in Bollywood with ‘Simmba,’ Ulka explored various mediums, including television, South Indian films, and Marathi cinema. However, post ‘Simmba,’ she felt stuck in sisterly roles. “I was young and wasn’t getting substantial roles. That’s when I shifted my focus to OTT platforms,” she shared.
Ulka has never believed in defining success solely through Bollywood. “I’ve always prioritized personal growth and learning. Whether it’s learning Kathak, singing, or theatre, I’ve always made time for it,” she said. Fortunately, her dedication paid off when she became a part of the historical TV show ‘Jhansi Ki Rani.’
Looking ahead, Ulka aspires to play a role that can inspire people. “I would love to portray someone who has made a significant impact on the world,” she expressed, highlighting her desire to continue taking up challenging roles.
