Bollywood Mascot: New Delhi, September 7, 2024 – Indian wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat recently resigned from their posts in the Railways to enter the political arena, but they are now entangled in a bureaucratic quagmire. Their resignations are still under review, casting uncertainty over their ability to contest in the forthcoming elections. This situation echoes previous cases where officials faced delays in resignation processing and subsequently missed out on their electoral chances.

Bajrang and Vinesh’s Resignation Dilemma

Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, who held positions as Special Duty Officers in the Indian Railways, have both submitted their resignations in preparation for their political careers. Reports indicate that Vinesh Phogat is set to contest from Jhulana on a Congress ticket, while Bajrang Punia’s candidacy is still up in the air. According to Northern Railway’s Chief PRO Kuldeep Singh, the resignations are under review and will be processed in accordance with departmental regulations. This process can take anywhere from 24 hours to six months, potentially jeopardizing their election plans. The deadline for filing nominations for Haryana’s assembly elections is September 12.

Historical Challenges with Resignation Approvals

This isn’t the first time officials have faced hurdles due to delays in resignation processing, affecting their electoral prospects.

In 2023, Nisha Bangre, a Madhya Pradesh civil service officer, resigned to contest the elections from the Amla seat. However, her resignation was delayed by the government, and despite efforts to expedite the process through media and the High Court, the delay resulted in her missing the nomination deadline. By the time her resignation was accepted, the Congress party had already finalized its candidate, leaving Nisha out of the race.

Similarly, Rajasthan IPS officer Madan Gopal Meghwal faced delays with his resignation in November 2018. His resignation took eight days to process, during which time his party assigned the ticket for the Khajuwala seat to another candidate. Although he re-applied for his job and contested in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he was not successful.

Abhishek Singh’s Protracted Resignation Issue

Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer Abhishek Singh also encountered delays with his resignation. Singh resigned in 2023 to run for office in Jaunpur, but his resignation was not accepted until March 2024. This delay hindered his election preparations, and the BJP ultimately selected another candidate for his intended constituency. Following the elections, Singh re-applied for his position, but his request has yet to be processed.

The cases of Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and other officials illustrate the complications that can arise from delays in processing resignations. For candidates eager to enter the political fray, timely acceptance of their resignations is crucial for a smooth transition and effective campaign planning. As the election deadlines approach, the resolution of these bureaucratic delays will be closely watched by both candidates and voters alike.
