In an old interview, Smita explained why she made the dramatic switch to commercial cinema. “For five years, I remained dedicated to small cinema, rejecting all commercial offers. By 1977-78, the small cinema movement gained momentum, and they began needing big stars for the projects. I was inexplicably removed from certain films, and though it seemed like a minor issue, it deeply affected me,” she said.

Smita was disheartened by the lack of recognition from the very industry she had given her all to. Her passion for art cinema was unshaken, but the constant rejection from such films made her rethink her choices. Rather than bowing to the situation, Smita made a bold decision to venture into commercial cinema, determined to prove her worth.

A Determined New Beginning

Smita’s frustration transformed into a firm resolve. She vowed to carve her own path in the industry. In her words, “I told myself, I am here, and I haven’t worked hard just to make money. I turned down major commercial offers because of my commitment to small cinema, but what did I get in return? If they need a name, I will make a name for myself.”

With this determination, Smita embraced commercial films and quickly made her mark, starring in blockbuster movies that showcased her versatility as an actress. She adapted to whatever opportunities came her way, ensuring her presence was felt across the industry.

Smita Patil Success in Commercial Films

Her decision to enter mainstream cinema was met with incredible success. Smita Patil starred in films like Shakti and Namak Halaal, becoming a prominent name in commercial cinema.
