Aishwarya Rai and Rani Mukerji: Inside the Rift That Ended Their Bond
In Bollywood, it’s often said that two actresses can never be best friends. This was especially believed during the peak careers of stars like Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukerji, Karisma Kapoor, and Raveena Tandon. Today, in this throwback, we’re diving into the reasons why Rani Mukerji and Aishwarya Rai’s close friendship came to an end.
While many believe Abhishek Bachchan was the reason for the fallout between the two, reports suggest that their friendship had already started crumbling before his entry into their lives. Let’s take a look back at what led to their fallout and the promise Rani had made to Aishwarya.

Rani’s Big Promise to Aishwarya Rai on TV
Years ago, when former Miss World Aishwarya Rai appeared on Farooq Shaikh’s talk show Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai, Rani was also supposed to join her. However, she couldn’t attend due to health reasons. Despite her absence, Rani sent a heartfelt video message for Aishwarya, lovingly addressing her as “Aishu Ma.”
In the video, Rani said, “Aishu Ma, you know how much I love you. I’m sorry I couldn’t make it to the show because I’m not feeling well. You know I’m always unwell. I just want to tell you that you mean a lot to me, and I love you very much. I want to say that we will remain friends for life.”

What Led to the Rift?
The fallout between Rani and Aishwarya reportedly began after an incident involving Salman Khan. According to BollywoodShaadis.com, after Salman caused a scene on the set of Chalte Chalte, Aishwarya was replaced in the film by Rani Mukerji. This marked the beginning of the end of their sister-like relationship. Although time healed some wounds, things never fully recovered.
To make matters worse, when Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai decided to get married, Rani’s heart was broken again. After his breakup with Karisma Kapoor, Abhishek grew close to Rani during the filming of Bunty Aur Babli, and the two were even rumored to be heading toward marriage. However, their relationship ended for undisclosed reasons, and Aishwarya eventually entered Abhishek’s life, with the two tying the knot in 2007.
Surprisingly, Rani’s disappointment wasn’t over Aishwarya and Abhishek’s relationship but rather the fact that her best friend didn’t invite her to the wedding. Rani herself revealed this in an interview, and from that moment on, their friendship was never the same.
